The Indians have released veteran closer Matt Capps to avoid paying him a $100,000 retention bonus on Tuesday. They will continue to negotiate with Capps on a minor league deal should he not be able to find a big league job.

They made a similar move with right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka on Sunday.

Jason Giambi is the only other player in camp who qualifies for the retention bonus, but he appears to have a chance to make the big league club.
