The contract-negotiation saga between the Lions and defensive end Cliff Avril never was simple or easy to understand.

It got even more complicated Friday when Avril contradicted what president Tom Lewand said about contract talks.

Avril signed a two-year deal with Seattle on Thursday for a reported $15 million, according to ESPN. When Lewand was asked specifically Thursday about attempts to re-sign Avril, he said: "We had lots of conversations with all of our free agents, with the ones that were re-signed, as well as the ones that had opportunities elsewhere."

But Avril, who thanked the Lions for a chance to play in the NFL, told SiriusXM Radio on Friday that very little communication took place.

"I'm not even sure if they wanted me to come back, honestly," he said. "The offer was -- there really wasn't much communication, honestly. So I took it as if I guess my time was done in Detroit."
