The Vancouver Canucks annonuced Thursday that they have agreed to a one-year contract extension with RFA defenceman Chris Tanev.

The deal will pay Tanev $1.5 million.

The short-term contract exposes the Canucks to some risk as Tanev could be due for a substantial raise with a good year but it makes some sense. During the negotiations they seemed unsure at times of quite what they had in Tanev. This contract gives them a year to find out and if he regresses they they won't be locked into a long-term overpayment. Plus with the cap likely going up the club should have more money available to pay Tanev if he earns it.
