Coach John Tortorella has implied several times during the season that what might be best for rookie LW Chris Kreider’s development would be playing for Connecticut (AHL).
On Thursday, for the second time in two weeks, Kreider, 21, was reassigned to the Whale after logging just 4:43 in Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to the Jets and being benched after he was part of a defensive breakdown that led to Olli Jokinen’s goal at 14:48 of the second period.
"I think Chris has a lot to learn about the game and a lot to learn about how to be a pro," Tortorella said. "Me playing him four minutes on a fourth line … is not going to help him."
Kreider has one goal and one assist in 11 games for the Rangers and five goals, seven assists and 57 penalty minutes in 34 games for Connecticut, where he played during the NHL lockout.
Kreider was also sent to the Whale on Feb. 15 but recalled the next day.
