Chris Carpenter will make his first start of the season Friday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, manager Mike Matheny announced following Sunday's 12-inning win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After confirming that Carpenter had recovered well from Saturday's 90-pitch simulation, Matheny and pitching coach Derek Lilliquist constructed a turn that would leave lefthander Jaime Garcia to make Thursday's start at Busch Stadium against the Houston Astros and Carpenter to work with an extra day's rest in Chicago. The alignment works well given Garcia's greater success at home.
