Chris Carpenter did his part Saturday afternoon at Dodger Stadium. Now it's up to the Cardinals to determine when — and where — he best fits the starting rotation.

Carpenter threw a 90-pitch simulated game before about 20 teammates and staff and was convincing enough that manager Mike Matheny suggested only a poor recovery from the session could derail his return to the active roster sometime next week.

"We had a plan and we're going to stick to," said manager Mike Matheny without divulging the plan. "Today was a good test."

"Tomorrow's another big day, but everything we've seen through this process — as much as you want to be cautious about how I feel when I wake up — I have no concerns," Carpenter said.
