Texas Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz will be held out of Friday’s game against Seattle because of chest soreness.
Cruz experienced the soreness overnight. The Rangers believe Cruz has a strained intercostal muscle, but they sent him to an area hospital this morning for tests to be certain the condition is not more serious.
“When it’s in that region, it’s prudent to do something more,” assistant general manager Thad Levine said. “The condition sounded consistent with something muscular.”
The club will wait until the results of the tests to determine if Cruz will join the Dominican Republic team for the World Baseball Classic. He is scheduled to leave the Rangers after Saturday’s game.
Aaron Cunningham, a non-roster player, will start in right field in place of Cruz.
