Chelsea and Tottenham will battle it out to sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

The Belgium international handed in a transfer request last night and both London clubs are keen to lure him to the capital.

Aston Villa still hope to keep their prize asset but a bid of around £25million will be enough to prise him away from Villa Park.

Chelsea and Spurs have made strengthening their front line a main priority for the summer but are running out of options.

The Blues have already lost out on main targets Radamel Falcao, Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski and are turning their attention to 22-year-old Benteke instead.

One of Tottenham’s targets, David Villa, has agreed a £4.4million deal to join Atletico Madrid from Barcelona, although Standard Sport understands they had already had second thoughts due to his wage demands and switched their attention to Benteke anyway.

The £25m fee is significantly more than what they would have paid for Villa and will smash their club record transfer.

But, unlike Villa, who was asking in excess of £150,000-a-week, Benteke will command around half that figure and still have possible sell-on value.

Both clubs face competition from last season’s Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund, who are looking for a long-term replacement for Lewandowski after confirming the Poland international will join Bayern Munich next year. Chelsea also continue to be linked with a move for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
