The new Chargers regime did their homework before deciding what to do with Jared Gaither

On Wednesday morning, they informed the left tackle.

Gaither has been released, resulting in $6 million of dead money against the 2013 salary cap. The decision comes a few days before the Chargers step on the field for the April 1 start of voluntary offseason conditioning.

Gaither, upon being claimed off waivers late in the 2011 season, was dominant in five starts.

His release comes amid questions up and down the organization about his commitment to the team. He signed a four-year deal in 2012 and pocketed $9 million for four starts.
