CC Sabathia returned to form with seven scoreless innings in a 7-0 victory over Detroit, as the Yankees avoided a sweep and received an encouraging outing from their ace.

Sabathia out-dueled Tigers star Justin Verlander. He struck out just four, but kept the team’s fearsome duo of Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder off the bases. A Tiger reached second base just once.

On offense, a pair of unlikely Yankees saviors emerged in the second inning. First Francisco Cervelli slashed an RBI double, driving a fastball into the left-center alley. Then Jayson Nix boomed a two-run home run on a lifeless changeup from Verlander. It was Nix’s first hit of the season. Verlander pointed to his own head after the homer fell.
