Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, before he would run the steps at PNC Park in a late-afternoon workout, detoured to the Cardinals' bullpen Tuesday to watch one of his starting pitchers throw a brief bullpen session. The starter's name was Chris Carpenter.

In between treatments and then surgery for a nerve condition that affected his right shoulder, Carpenter has led the league in bullpen sessions thrown without ever pitching this season. But, just more than a month after his thoracic outlet syndrome surgery, Carpenter threw all of his pitches in a 40-toss session.

Asked afterward if he would be able pitch before the season ended, Carpenter said, significantly, "I don't know. Let's see what happens."
