The Reds put out this press release on Tuesday afternoon:

Brandon Phillips is away from the team on a private personal matter.

MLB.com’s transactions page has him listed “on the paternity list.”

MLB has had a paternity list since 2011, allowing players to 1-3 days to be away from the team for the birth of a child. MLB can replace that player on the roster. Henry Rodriguez was up with the team recently when Phillips was injured. Jack Hannahan and Cesar Izturis have started games at second base.
