Major-league veteran Brad Hawpe, of Boswell High School, will try again this spring to revive his career.
Hawpe on Thursday agreed to a minor-league deal with Pittsburgh and will be in the major-league spring-training camp on a non-roster basis.
Hawpe, 33, had a similar deal with the Texas Rangers last season. He did not make the major-league club and was released, at his request, after hitting .260 with a .382 slugging percentage in 123 at-bats with Double-A Frisco.
Hawpe, an outfielder-first baseman, has played eight major-league seasons with Colorado and San Diego. He made the National League All-Star team in 2009. His career was derailed by "Tommy John" tendon-transplant surgery on the left elbow in 2011.
