After a couple of days of treatment on his oblique strain Dustin McGowan was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday to make room for the return of Sergio Santos.

McGowan had originally felt a twinge during his outing on Monday in Oakland but didn’t complain about it until his second inning of work.

“He’s been hurt so much that he probably didn’t want to even think that he was hurt again” said manager John Gibbons. “But you have to be smart with that because it can turn into a long-term deal.

“Those things can get bad and they can drag on too. So we really don’t know yet.

“He can’t do anything for a few days.”

Brandon Morrow who is still in a no-throw period in Dunedin was placed on the 60-day DL to make room for McGowan on the 15-day.

Santos is expected to pick up a full workload immediately except that he will probably be a one-inning man for the time being.
