Jose Reyes rejoined the Blue Jays in New York Friday night, and after bouncing around the field and looking like he was ready to play, the thought was the personable shortstop could be back in the lineup sooner than projected.
Reyes, though, cautioned against any speculation about his return from an ankle injury that has already chewed up five weeks of his season.
“I’ve been through a lot of injuries in my career so I’ve learned from that, I’ve learned to take my time,” said Reyes as the Jays met the Yankees for a three-game series in New York.
Reyes certainly had the clubhouse buzzing. Hours before game time, he was in his shorts and a Superman T-shirt, filtering around with the customary energy and smile that makes him a favourite.
Out on the field, he was standing out at shortstop — not doing any fielding — then taking some throws behind the batting screens at second base.
The timetable for his return remains end of June at the earliest.
