New Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is considering raiding his former club to sign defender Martin Skrtel.

Napoli are the overriding favourites among several bookmakers to sign Slovakian international Martin Skrtel, with SkyBet dropping their odds to makel last year’s Serie A runners-up 10/3 to agree a deal.

The 28-year-old saw his first-team chances limited in the second half of last season as he made just one Premier League start in the final four months.

A move to Italy would give Skrtel the chance to work with his former boss and rebuild his career.

Such a deal has been already been mooted at length over the close season, with Skrtel’s agent Karol Csonto telling Italian radio station Radio CRC last month: “Obviously Napoli know Martin well, but there cannot be any contact between us and them if they do not first reach an agreement with Liverpool.

“Between Martin Skrtel and Rafa Benitez is a professional relationship that has gone on from the years they spent together at Liverpool.”

Benitez brought Skrtel to Anfield in January 2008 from Zenit St. Petersburg in a £6.5 million deal, with the playing having made more than 150 appearances for Liverpool.
