Arsenal are reported to be considering making an offer for Marseille defender Nicolas Nkoulou in the January transfer window but will face rival interest from Serie A club Napoli.

According to French publication Le 10 Sport, Nkoulou has been targeted by Arsenal for some time after first impressing the Gunners hierarchy in this season's Champions League.

Nkoulou's performances as Arsenal twice beat Marseille are believed to have led to manager Arsene Wenger identifying the player as a possible future recruit.

The Arsenal defence has been much improved this season, but part of Nkoulou's appeal is that he can also feature in defensive midfield, a position where the club are believed to be actively recruiting.
Nkoulou, 23, has become an integral part of the Marseille team since joining from Monaco in 2011.
