With the Bengals slated to take on the Falcons in the preseason for the second straight year, there will be an added element.

The teams announced on Thursday that there will be two combined practices between the teams at the Falcons’ training camp complex in Flowery Branch, Ga.

The sessions will take place Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 5-6, and will be open to the public. Times are to be determined. On Aug. 8, the two teams will meet each other in their preseason opener at the Georgia Dome at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

“I’m glad we were able to work this out with (head coach) Mike (Smith) and the Falcons,” said Lewis. “We’ve done some joint practices with other teams in Cincinnati in the past, and I think it helps our guys stay sharp and focused as we move through the preseason. You put yourself on the field with another team and let the competitive juices flow a little bit.”

Smith and Lewis coached together for three seasons in Baltimore when Lewis was defensive coordinator and Smith was a defensive assistant.

It is the first time the Bengals have had a joint preseason practice with a team since 2007, when they hosted the Saints. When New Orleans was here for a couple days last year due to weather issues, there was some discussion of a joint practice but both sides were unable to put something together on short notice.

The first training camp practice is scheduled for July 25 with the last one tentatively slated for Aug. 15. Since the mock game and scrimmage usually take place the weekend before the first preseason game, the status or changes in format for those games are undetermined.
