The first Enquirer Mock Draft of the season has the Bengals taking a safety – Texas’ Kenny Vaccaro – for only the second time in team history. I’m normally not one to take a safety in the first round, but this is one of the better classes in a long time, with the possibility of three being selected in the first 40 picks.
Even if the Bengals do take a safety, one player who will need to have a breakout season is Taylor Mays.
Since he came into the league as a second-round pick by San Francisco in 2010, Mays has not lived up to expectations. When Mays was traded to the Bengals in 2011, most of the season was a learning experience. Many thought that last season he would step up and earn a starting role, but he ended up playing only 22.8 percent of the defensive snaps (244 of 1,068).
