Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran will attempt to show the team he can play the outfield despite a hairline fracture in a toe on his right foot.

Beltran returns to the lineup today and gives it an opening day look.

The news this morning that David Freese will start the season on the disabled list leaves the Cardinals with Matt Carpenter as the opening day starter at the position. Daniel Descalso will start at second as a result. If Beltran can show he's capable of playing through the pain in his foot, the Cardinals will consider opening the season with him in right.

All of these moving parts mean today's lineup -- the one the Cardinals are taking north to Port St. Lucie, Fla., to face the Mets -- could be Xeroxed and posted in the clubhouse Monday in Arizona.
