As expected, the Red Sox placed right-hander Josh Beckett on the disabled list yesterday with a sore shoulder. The hope remains that Beckett misses no more than two starts, though manager Bobby Valentine revealed the added wrinkle that he'll also soon get a shot in his right thumb, which bothered him at the end of spring training, but hadn't come up as an issue since his first start in Detroit.

Beckett's official diagnosis is shoulder inflammation. He underwent treatment before last night's 4-3 win over the Cubs, and then declined to speak to reporters.

"He's got some inflammation that's got to calm down and take the time, whatever time it takes to do it," Valentine said. "We thought in between starts was enough, and he could have gotten an extra day or two, but I guess we're going to take the conservative route."
