Jason Bay had an 11-game trial to show the Mets he deserved to remain an everyday player. The verdict arrived yesterday: Bay is still a mess.

The struggling left fielder was in the lineup largely because of strong career numbers against Padres starter Jason Marquis, but finished 0-for-2 with an RBI in the Mets' 7-3 loss at Petco Park.

It completed a forgettable road trip for Bay, who went 2-for-31 (.065) with three RBIs and likely will be relegated to a part-time player when the Mets return to Citi Field tomorrow.

"I'm looking at the entire trip," manager Terry Collins said before the game when asked if Bay could improve his situation with a strong performance against the Padres.
