Matt Duchene probably already had a decent chance at making the Canadian Olympic team in February. It could be just a bit better now with the long-term injury to Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos.

Stamkos is out indefinitely after breaking a leg Monday in Boston. Duchene, 22, is off to a great start and participated in Canada's orientation camp this summer.

"Obviously, if I was a coach of Team Canada, he would make my team," Avs coach Patrick Roy said. "Dutchy doesn't have any control over that, and what he does have control over is how he's playing, and he's played in superb fashion."

Duchene badly wants to play in Sochi for Canada, but he wasn't feeling buoyant because of Stamkos' injury.

"I tweeted something out to him, and I just hope he recovers as fast as he can," Duchene said.
