Last year forgotten, Jemile Weeks opened the Cactus League season with a strong game at the plate and in the field.
And make no mistake, defense will be just as important as offense this spring when it comes to deciding the A's second base job. Last season, Weeks' defense took a step backward along with his batting average, but Saturday, he made a sensational diving stop on a hard bouncer up the middle by Jean Segura to start a double play in Oakland's 2-1 loss to the Brewers at Maryvale.
"It's too early for that!" joked Weeks' brother, Milwaukee second baseman Rickie Weeks. "Great play."
Rickie Weeks had words of encouragement for Jemile from the get-go. Jemile Weeks banged a double to lead off the game, and Rickie told him, "Stay right there. Same swing. Right there."
A's Weeks looks for a fresh start
