Arsene Wenger is stepping up his interest in Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Arsenal boss watched Schneiderlin in France's final Group match with Ecuador and has detailed scouts to keep tabs on the 24-year-old.

Wenger, working as a TV pundit in Brazil, is keen to see whether France international Schneiderlin can handle the step up in class having been a surprise last minute call-up to the squad.

Arsenal's coaching staff believe Schneiderlin could be the perfect fit to be their midfield anchorman and have been keeping tabs on the £20m-rated midfielder for more than a year.

But they will face a battle to lure Schneiderlin away from Southampton with their new boss Ronaldo Koeman ready to try to persuade him to stay by offering him the captaincy, with current skipper Adam Lallana set to join Liverpool.
