On most nights, there are perhaps three or four times when a Diamondbacks starting pitcher will look in for a sign from catcher Miguel Montero and quickly give a shake of his head. Montero might be calling for, say, a fastball when the pitcher wants a curveball.

"Last night," Montero said Wednesday, "it was like almost every pitch."
