Two local stars made their Cactus League debuts: Angels Opening Day starter Jered Weaver and Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp.
Kemp got two at-bats as the designated hitter in a split-squad game against the San Diego Padres. Facing veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia, Kemp grounded out to third base in the first inning and struck out looking in the third.
Mattingly said that Kemp will have a day off today, when the Dodgers visit the Seattle Mariners, then play again Sunday against the Cleveland Indians.
Weaver pitched two innings against the other Dodgers squad in Tempe, allowing one run on an RBI double by Luis Cruz. The right-hander also allowed a single and two stolen bases by Dee Gordon, walked none and struck out two.
