Alex Avila is finally hitting like his old self. His old old self.

Avila hit a pair of home runs including a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning that helped the Detroit Tigers squeak out a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in front of a sellout crowd Sunday at Comerica Park.

It was Avila's fourth career multi-homer game and his first since May 24 2011.

The win trimmed the Tigers' magic number to nine games and extended their division lead to 5 1/2 games over second-place Cleveland with 13 games remaining.

The Royals meanwhile fell eight games behind the Tigers. The loss pushed them a half-game behind Baltimore in the AL wild-card chase and one game behind the New York Yankees.
