Adrian Gonzalez had to choose between two versions of himself to start the season. He could be the slugger of 2008 and 2009 who blasted 76 homers with the Padres. Or he could be the line drive hitter of the next two years who favored a bad shoulder.

He chose Option A, and his reasons were sound.

He chose wrong.

A couple of months ago, however, Gonzalez realized his mistake. Because he had fundamentally altered his swing in 2010 and 2011 to compensate for a shoulder which ultimately required surgery, he couldn't suddenly rediscover the power stroke that had fueled his rise to prominence.
