Clearing the decks a bit before this weekend’s festivities …

— From our website (tonight) and our paper (tomorrow), a look at Barry Zito’s road from rotation question mark to starter for the home opener.

I talked to Marco Scutaro and Hunter Pence about their at-bats against Zito last year and both focused on the importance of Zito’s cutter. Here’s what Pence said:

“Pitching is about deception, and he’s got a lot of deception,” Pence said. “He’s really smart out there and doesn’t give you good pitches to hit. Even his strikes are tough to hit. You think you’re seeing a cutter out of his hand and it’s really the fastball down the middle. And if you protect too much against the cutter, he’ll go back outside.”

— Some leftover links from last night:

My game story on Tim Lincecum picking up a win over the Dodgers, and here was Tim Kawakami’s take.

And another Tim: Yahoo’s Tim Brown on what he saw from Lincecum.

From Dylan Hernandez, seems the Dodgers are already a bit frustrated.

— Dan Brown passed this along, regarding an event with Juan Marichal:

Juan Marichal, the legendary Giants pitcher, will sign copies of his new book this Friday night at the Barnes & Noble book store in Emeryville. The Hall of Famer’s autobiography, “Juan Marichal: My Journey from the Dominican Republic to Cooperstown,’’ traces the right-hander’s rise from the rural countryside to the big leagues, where he went 243-142 with a 2.89 ERA over 16 seasons.

According to the publisher, the book promises “dozens of anecdotes about his major league years and the rivalries he had with the other great pitchers of the era. He also discusses his post-baseball life as a scout and later as a key government promoter of the Dominican’s sports program.” Also appearing at the signing will be Dan Fost, author of the new coffee table book, “Giants Past & Present,’’ which includes the 2012 championship season.

The free event begins at 6 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 5605 Bay Street in Emeryville. The phone number is 510-547-0905.

— And finally, this weekend’s festivities:
