As Michael Young was acknowledging the crowd Sunday night after collecting his 2,000th career hit and as a large congratulatory banner was being unfurled in center field, the baseball was thrown out of play as a keepsake for the Rangers' all-time hits leader.
It's not headed to a mantle or a trophy case in Young's home, or being given away to a family member or coach as a token of his appreciation.
For now, the 2,000th-hit ball his headed to a closet, joining a collection of other baseballs from past milestone hits.
At least 2,000 will reside in a protective case. Others are kept in a tube sock. But they will see the light of day again someday.
