The Washington Capitals have recalled center Casey Wellman from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) and re-assigned defenseman Nate Schmidt to Hershey, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Wellman, 26, has appeared in 37 games for the Bears this season, registering 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) and six penalty minutes. The 6’0”, 183-pound center scored two goals on Friday against Syracuse and ranks second among Hershey skaters in goals (12) and fourth on the team in points (23).

In 206 career AHL games, Wellman has recorded 158 points (65 goals, 93 assists) and 69 penalty minutes. The Brentwood, California, native made his Capitals debut on Dec. 17 at Philadelphia. Wellman has appeared in 42 career NHL games with Minnesota and Washington, registering 13 points (four goals, nine assists) and four penalty minutes
